To the World's Mountain Biking Capitol
Day 40
Nucla, CO to Moab, UT
Dan, Rich, Dave, and I formed Team No-Fry today. We wanted to get to Moab as fast as possible to avoid getting fried by the sun. We started out our ride by backtracking the last 5 hilly miles of yesterday’s ride. The early morning air was refreshing and cool. We welcomed the lower temperatures because we knew that it would get a lot hotter once the sun came up. The ride up to the first water break was pretty flat since we were riding through a canyon. The first water break was in front of the general store in Bedrock, CO. The store looked like it hadn’t changed since it was built in the late 1800’s. We heard that the storefront had been in several Hollywood movies.
About 10 or 15 miles after the water break, we had a steep three-mile climb out of the canyon. After the climb, we had a downhill, which then gave way to a few miles of flat land until we crossed the border into Utah. In Utah, we had to climb another hill, but this one was 6 miles long and the first two miles of it were at a 9% grade. At the top of the hill, I was waiting for Dan and Dave. It was incredible how quiet my surroundings were. As I was waiting, a deer came up over a hill. It obviously wasn’t expecting to see me because it turned and ran away when it saw me. It was downhill the rest of the way to highway 191. We ate lunch in La Sal, which was half way down the hill.
After we went the rest of the way down the hill and turned right onto highway 191, the terrain was hilly for a few miles, and then flattened out going into Moab. Dan had some trouble with flat tires once the terrain had flattened out. Some riders stopped at
